Yes I got scammed lowkey at the markets in Vienna during this episode of Air B'n'Feast by none other than the olive guy. Apart from that, a mild tarnish, the experience was a beautiful city break with some pretty delicious food!
So to go into a little more detail about what happened at the markets: walking past the olive guy, and he asked me if I wanted to try some olives. I did, and they were delicious. He asked me if I wanted to buy some, so I said I liked x, y, z olives, and before I knew it, he'd loaded a bag with the three olives Id pointed at, mixed them together, about a kilo. A KILO. He placed it on the scale, said 30 euros. I said you're effing kidding! He said come on man - safe to say I went red and got very embarrassed, so... I paid for it, and walked away very peeved.
So to reiterate my tips: you can say no, don't reply until you're absolutely sure, you don't have to go to markets!!
But here is a recipe for what I cooked (with some extras to make it better):
5 King Trumpet Mushrooms, Sliced Lengthways
2 Eggs, Beaten
1 Cup of Breadcrumbs
1 Cup of Flour, Seasoned with Salt and White Pepper
Salt the mushrooms. Let osmosis occur (water will bead on the surface) - pat dry with paper towels. They'll be nice and limp! Douse in seasoned flour, then into the eggs, then the breadcrumbs. Fry in olive oil until golden brown. So delicious.
1kg Pumpkin
Cream cheese, or cream or some other cream thing to help stabilize it
Olive Oil
Salt
Pepper
Boil the pumpkin, puree with a/the creamy thing, season with salt and pepper, and lace with some olive oil. If its a bit loose, cook it down on a low heat!
A large handful of Fresh Basil
Marinated Green Olives (not pickled!)
Caraway Seeds, about a teaspoon
Olive oil
Lemon Juice, just a teaspoon or two to take the edge off the olive saltiness.
Blend up all three of these, or for a nicer texture, go at it with a pestle and mortar!
Plate it all up as per the video, and lay it down with some lingonberries or cranberries, or other tart berry like that. Well worth a go!
As for Vienna, what a beautiful city. Actually one of the most pristine cities I've seen. It's like walking through a museum, incredibly well preserved as far as old European cities go. We were only there for a short time, but I think I need more time to truly get to grips with the city beyond what it looks like, on a level where I can understand the culture.
Oh and also: incredible public transport.
