But Private J. Robert Conroy adopted him, and when the 102nd Infantry deployed to France, Conroy smuggled Stubby aboard the ship hidden in a coal bin.
What happened next made Stubby the most decorated dog in United States military history.
Stubby served in 17 battles and 4 major offensives on the Western Front. He saved his entire regiment from a poison gas attack by detecting the gas before soldiers could and waking them in time to put on masks. He caught a German spy trying to map American positions. He was wounded by grenade shrapnel and received the Purple Heart. He learned to warn soldiers of incoming artillery before they could hear it.
For his actions, Stubby was promoted to Sergeant—the only dog in US history to earn rank through combat.
