Dragon Ball Z | Frieza's Symphony (Mike Smith) | By Gladius

I finally made Frieza's theme from DBZ!!!
(I know it's Freeza but I grew up writing Frieza so I'm used to it...)

Note I didn’t include Golden Frieza theme as I wanted this to just be Z Frieza but will probably make it separately in future when I start covering Super more.

It took me a while to get here because I wasn't sure how to approach Frieza. Musically he doesn't have a strong melody, apart from those two Bladerunner notes, but he does have a remarkable sonic presence that is unmistakable in the Frieza saga. I did some research and was able to track down a compilation of the themes Mike Smith wrote for Frieza, and arrange them in a medley. There was about 5-6 different movements I decided on and a few more I really liked but couldn't fit in. When it was time to record and produce, as the name suggests, I wanted it to feel more symphonic than predominantly synth based (although I had to keep the synth's there as they represent his alien, futuristic aspect to me). Interestingly, I discovered when using the Cello to layer the Bladerunner synth, in certain parts; specifically the last stretch of music, it eerily reminded me of Hildur Guðnadóttir's theme for Joker, which firstly, is a score that I adore, but secondly, creeped me out. To think that the sound of a psychopathic clown could echo the sound of a psychopathic galactic tyrant....

Oh, and by the way; drawing Frieza in all his forms and staring at him for literally hours can’t be good for my mental health. Dude is scary as hell. Every form is scary in its own way…
