A run through of lighting a friction fire with bamboo using the fire saw technique.
Over the last month here in Hong Kong I have been experimenting with lighting fires by friction, and this technique: the fire saw has become my favourite. It is much simpler than the conventional European 'bow drill' with far fewer moving parts, yet does not require any more energy input. Also the entire technique only requires one piece of bamboo, even the tinder that you need to catch the coal can be scraped off the bamboo segment.
