Tcha Limberger performs a traditional Manouche song: ‘Mê hum mato’.
Like his Dutch cousins from the Rosenberg family, the blind multi-instrumentalist Tcha Limberger from Belgium was brought up with the music of the Manouche jazz style of the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.
As a child, Tcha wanted to become a flamenco singer, but because of the stories about his grandfather and recordings by Toki Horvath, Tcha started playing the violin at the age of seventeen. A few years later he leaves for Budapest, where he takes lessons in gypsy music and classical music.
Besides composing, teaching and studying, Tcha is the founder of some leading groups; among others the Magyar Nota band, Les Violons de Bruxelles and the Guitar Duo Tcha Limberger-Herman Schamp.
Tcha Limberger is very clear about the music he ‘intends’ to play: ‘this music deserves to be re-appreciated in it’s essential form and for that reason I don’t intend to create a new style immediately. It should again be played by musicians who really want to play it. Of course, we will not try to sound like a Gypsy band out of 1920, but also we’ll not play current versions either. I would like to bring all these elements together that made me want to study this music, that still inspire me about this music, even when it seems to be dead already.’
