Happy Wednesday my loves! Today I am going to talk to you about the 7 biggest mistakes you are making when adding retinol to your skin care routine. Retinol is hailed as a miracle skincare product by dermatologists and skin care experts alike, but you won't see it's full benefits if you are making any of these 7 mistakes.

The first mistake is starting out too fast when using retinol. You should be using it only every 1-2x a week in the initial stages of use so your skin has time to adjust to its effects.

The second mistake is using retinol less than 3x a week indefinitely (once your skin has adjusted). You will not see much benefit from this. Try to work your way up to every other night, or every night if possible.

Third, using retinol as part of your morning skincare routine is a mistake. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, and exposing your skin to the sun immediately after applying retinol can stop it from working.

The fourth biggest mistake it not waiting until skin is completely dry before applying your retinol. While many skincare products benefit from being applied to wet skin, retinol can absorb too deeply when it come in contact with water, causing extra drying, peeling, redness, etc.

Mistake number five is not letting your retinol fully absorb (15-20 minutes) before applying your next product. The exception is if you have extremely sensitive skin, you can apply moisturizer 10 minutes before and after applying your retinol.

Our sixth mistake is not being consistent every single week with your retinol. It takes time for it to work, so stay consistent!

Last but not least, mistake number seven is quitting during the "purge" phase. Breakouts, redness, peeling, and dryness are very common side affects to retinol in the first 1 week to 2 months!

If your purse phase lasts over 2 months, switch brands of retinol as it is likely that this retinol does not work for your skin.
