Syria's government loses Daraa to rebels; officials abandon positions in Sweida | DD India

Syrian rebels have seized control of Daraa, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, marking the fourth city lost by Assad's forces in a week. The rebels are advancing on Damascus, having taken Aleppo, Hama, and Nawa, and are pushing towards the strategic city of Homs. In Sweida Province, government officials abandoned key buildings as local fighters captured critical checkpoints, further weakening Assad's southern control. The crisis has led to massive displacement, with over 370,000 people, mostly women and children, already displaced and 1.5 million more expected to be uprooted. Amid escalating tensions, Iran reiterated its support for Assad, while the US and Russia advised their citizens to leave Syria. India also issued a travel advisory, highlighting the deteriorating security and humanitarian crisis in the region.
