Tensions were high as the former journalist arrived at the venue, as voters from across the political spectrum gathered.

As Zemmour arrived, he was set upon by a mob of angry protesters, one of whom managed to grab him by the neck.

Later, anti-racism activists were attacked by Zemmour's far-right supporters as they entered the venue.
