At the United Nations General Assembly 2025, Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned that with war returning to Europe, there is “no other option” but to increase defence spending. He announced that Greece is already allocating over 3% of GDP to defence and is prepared to do more in the face of rising security challenges.

Mitsotakis strongly reaffirmed Greece’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, calling the war not only a fight for freedom but also for democracy and the rules-based global order. He cautioned against the revival of imperial ambitions and illusions of past glory driving current conflicts.

On the Middle East, he stressed Greece’s recognition of Israel’s right to defend itself, while warning that prolonged military actions risk eroding international support.

Turning to regional issues, Mitsotakis called for peaceful coexistence with Türkiye, urging Ankara to remove its threat of war and resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue. He also underscored Greece’s unwavering support for Cyprus, denouncing Türkiye’s continued occupation and reaffirming commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation solution.
