Ed (Porky) Oliver tucked a check for 23-hundred dollars in his pocket and head north after winning the 9th Annual Greenbriar Invitational Golf tournament yesterday. (show film)
In the final round Oliver shot a 66 which gave him a 72-hole total of 266...three strokes better than home pro Sammy Snead. It was the first tournament victory for Porky since 1953 when he won the Kansas City Open.
Oliver has been one of the most popular and most consistent money winners on the professional tour. He always manages to finish near the top in the tournaments he does enter.
On the final 18 holes played yesterday on the Old White course at White Sulphur Springs, Oliver dumped in a 35-foot putt for and eagle which virtually sewed up the title for him. He birdied the 16th and then parred the 17th and 18th to ice it away. And, among the first to offer congratulations was Mrs. Clara Oliver, a mother of four, who stuck by her husband through four grueling rounds.
Drawing the biggest gallery of the day was home pro Sammy Snead, who started fast but finished slowly. He was after his 4th Greenbriar Invitational title. Snead was four under par the first 12 holes before erractic play ruined his bid.
On the short l40-yard 18th he pushed an eight-iron shot wide to the right of the green.....
His chip shot fell short....and then he muffed a short putt that gave him a bogey four.
Needless to say, the tempermental Slammer was unhappy about his poor finish. He had been the favorite to win what has been called "Sammy Sneads personal Tournament." While signing his official score card he became so disgusted with the results he ripped the card. Sneads 269 total and second place finish earned him $1,300. Shee Riegel and Vic Ghezzi finished tied for third with 273s.
