The chorus is simple enough, but its origins are complex. The one name that appears repeatedly along with others is that of Albert Orsborn as the author of the lyrics. He is said to have written them in 1916 during World War I when he was a young officer. Many years later he became the 6th general of the Salvation Army, and was often described as the "Poet General" for his many songs and choruses.
