In this video, we take a look at Kenya's first female Kenya Air Force commander, Major General Fatuma Ahmed’s remarkable 42-year military journey.

President William Ruto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, on 27th June 2025, made radical and tactical changes in the top command of the KDF. Changes that the majority of Kenyans argue are a path into determining who will become the next chief of defense forces.

In these changes, a rare redeployment has seen Lieutenant General David Tarus moved to the National Defence University as Vice Chancellor, while Lieutenant General David Ketter has been appointed the new Army Commander.

Among the numerous appointments and promotions, Major General Bernard Waliaula has been named the new Kenya Air Force Commander. His appointment follows the retirement of Major General Fatuma Ahmed, who exits the military as the first-ever female service commander to rise to the rank of major general in a traditionally male-dominated KDF.
