Born in 1923 in Danzig, George and his family moved to Berlin when he was two. Life changed from the moment the Nazis came to power in 1933.

George was sent to Belgium on a Kindertransport following the Kristallnacht riots in November 1938. After the Germans invaded Belgium, George tried to flee and was arrested and sent to Auschwitz in 1940, where he spent the next five years. He was assigned to work in an armament factory.

In 1945 George was sent on a death march, escaped and was found by American soldiers. His father did not survive, but he was reunited with his mother after the war.
