As of April 2, 2025, the United Kingdom has implemented significant changes to its visitor visa policies, primarily through the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This new requirement affects travelers from countries that previously enjoyed visa-free access to the UK, including European Union (EU) member states, the United States, Canada, and Australia. 

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Overview:
• Purpose: The ETA aims to enhance border security by pre-screening travelers before they arrive in the UK. 
• Application Process:
• Submission: Travelers must apply online via the official UK government website or through the UK ETA app. 
• Requirements: Applicants need to provide personal details, passport information, biometric data, and answer security-related questions. 
• Fee: The application fee is £10, increasing to £16 from April 9, 2025. 
• Processing Time: Decisions are typically made within three working days. 
• Validity and Usage:
• Duration: An approved ETA is valid for two years or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. 
• Entries Allowed: Holders can make multiple visits to the UK during the validity period.
• Length of Stay: Each visit can last up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, or short-term study. 

Exemptions:

Certain groups are exempt from the ETA requirement, including: 
• Individuals holding a valid UK visa. 
• Those with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. 
• British and Irish citizens. 
• Children under 18 visiting as part of organized school groups from specific countries. 

Specific Country Requirements:
• Trinidad and Tobago: As of March 12, 2025, nationals from Trinidad and Tobago are required to obtain a visa before traveling to the UK, replacing the previous ETA eligibility. 
• Jordan: Since September 10, 2024, Jordanian nationals must secure a visa prior to UK travel, following the removal of their ETA eligibility. 

Implications for Travelers:

The introduction of the ETA system aligns the UK’s entry requirements with similar systems in other countries, such as the United States’ ESTA and the European Union’s forthcoming ETIAS. Travelers are advised to apply for the ETA well in advance of their planned travel dates to accommodate processing times. Additionally, all travelers, including children, must have their own individual ETA approval before departure.
