Vocal fry, also known as creaky voice, is characterized by low-frequency, irregular vocal cord vibrations producing a creaky or rattling sound. It often occurs at the end of sentences, particularly with falling intonation patterns. Though often associated with young American women, vocal fry is used by speakers of all genders, ages, and nationalities. It serves various communicative functions beyond simply conveying indifference or boredom.
