University of Calcutta has a long tradition of teaching and research in atmospheric sciences. Till date it has been using passive experiments to study the lower atmosphere. The Stratosphere Troposphere or ST Radar has proved to be a useful and versatile tool for lower atmospheric and ionospheric studies. Appreciating that the lower atmosphere is the seat of many interesting physical phenomena with implications to global change, in 2009, the University of Calcutta, proposed to acquire a ST Radar under the DST program of developing ST Radar network in the country. This was also in line with the existing research programs on atmospheric sciences operational at the University.
