(4 Dec 2017) Six Catalan politicians have left jails near Madrid after lawyers paid the 100,000 euro (118,000 US dollar) bail for each of them that a judge had set for their release earlier on Monday.
Two of the former Catalan cabinet ministers were released in the afternoon from a women's jail in Alcala Meco, followed by four male ex ministers who left the Estremera prison, some 50 kilometers southeast of Madrid, later in the evening.
All are still being investigated for rebellion, sedition and embezzlement in events tied to an independence declaration in Catalonia in late October.
A Supreme Court judge upheld on Monday the custody without bail for four additional members of the Catalan independence movement, including former Vice President Oriol Junqueras and two activists investigated for sedition.
The released politicians didn't speak to reporters. They were expected to travel to Catalonia and join campaigning events there for an early election on 21 December.
