Could AI Ever Become Conscious?

Could AI become conscious? If artificial intelligence can respond to and interact with stimuli in what seems to be intelligent and sophisticated ways how is it different from humans and animals? And does the fact that it can learn from experience mean that AI could become self-aware?

Rupert says these questions are based on an assumption, namely that we as human beings acquire or have consciousness. But awareness is not the property of a human being or a cat or a dog. Only awareness is aware. It is not we as people who are aware. It is we as awareness who are aware.

And everything is a manifestation of that — of the activity of that awareness. But that doesn't mean that everything that appears in awareness is itself aware. So an AI program or a computer, will never acquire awareness, however sophisticated it becomes.
