EY Oceania Chief Economist Cherelle Murphy predicts interest rates will "stay steady" in November and December despite an annual inflation drop from 3.8 to 2.8 per cent in the September quarter.

"I think that they [interest rates] will stay steady at this both in November and December and that's really the policy of least regret," Ms Murphy told Sky News Australia.

"The RBA doesn't want to cut too soon and risk refuelling inflation.

"I think if it gets through summer, looks again at the numbers in February, and if it sees those underlying inflation numbers start to come down a little further, it's going to feel more that that's the time to put in place a rate cut."
