This morning every member of the Lower House Crossbench came together to demand an urgent, independent and external review of workplace procedures at Australian Parliament House, following the latest harrowing allegations of serious sexual assault. We co-signed and delivered a letter to the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition.
This afternoon I raised the issue on behalf of the Crossbench in Question Time. A few hours later I (together with all Members of Parliament) received a letter from the Prime Minister announcing an independent review into the workplaces of Parliamentarians and their staff “at arm’s length of Government”. I am grateful that the Prime Minister has taken our letter seriously. This review needed to happen. However, we must ensure that this review is timely and that the findings are implemented as a matter of urgency.
