Ensemble Draconis is a Shenzhen-based chamber collective that brings together international distinguished artists, whose careers span major concert halls, global festivals, top-tier competitions, and leading orchestras across Asia, Europe, and North America. With backgrounds that include appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Competition, Zürich Opera House Orchestra, and leading international festivals, the members unite their diverse expertise to explore today’s most compelling musical voices. Known for championing cutting-edge works while remaining rooted in a broad classical repertoire, Ensemble Draconis cultivates projects that ignite artistic innovation, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and the creation of new artistic possibilities.
Artists:
Dr. Alvin Wong, Associate Professor at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, is an internationally acclaimed cellist praised for his “warm, hall-filling sound” and “remarkable technique.” He has performed as soloist and chamber musician on five continents, including Carnegie Hall, and is a leading advocate of contemporary music, premiering works by Grammy, Pulitzer, and MacArthur-winning composers. A founding member of the Noble Piano Trio and Ormond String Quartet, he has recorded widely and served as principal or guest principal cellist with orchestras in the U.S., Germany, and Australia. His research on artistic practice and cross-cultural hybridity has earned grants, and his leadership roles include Deputy Director and Head of Strings at the Ostfildern City Music School and founder of the Melbourne Cello Festival. Formerly on faculty in Germany, Australia, and the U.S., he has led major curriculum reforms and mentored students now active in leading orchestras and conservatories. He trained at Eastman, Indiana, and Yale under János Starker and Aldo Parisot.
Yingjia Xue, Associate Professor (Teaching) at the School of Music, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, is a leading Chinese pianist and laureate of the Scriabin Competition in Paris, the André Dumortier International Competition, and the Yamaha Piano Competition in Belgium. He has performed extensively across Europe and North America and appeared at major festivals including the Moritzburg Festival, Semaine Musicale de Crans-Montana, Ottawa Chamberfest, and Festival d’Orford. Xue has soloed with the Beijing Symphony, Shenzhen Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic, and L’Orchestra Ensemble de Paris under conductors such as Christian Ehwald and Lihua Tan. In 2021 he premiered Wenjing Guo’s Olympic-commissioned Piano Concerto with the Beijing Symphony. He trained at the Accademia Pianistica “Incontri col Maestro” with Louis Lortie, Michel Dalberto, and Boris Petrushansky.
Dr. Yoon Jung Yang is an internationally recognized violinist and Assistant Professor (Teaching) at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. A Curtis alumna who later trained at New England Conservatory and Hanns Eisler Berlin, she is a semifinalist of the Queen Elizabeth Competition and prizewinner at the Max Rostal International Competition. She has appeared with ensembles including the Seoul Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Belgium, Korean Chamber Orchestra, and KBS Symphony, and collaborates regularly with artists such as Atar Arad, Boris Berman, and Ralph Kirshbaum. A committed champion of contemporary music, she has premiered works by Richard Danielpour, Brett Dean, Steve Mackey, and Christopher Theofanidis. Her teaching career spans Yellow Barn’s Young Artists Program, Sookmyung Women’s University, and Korea National University of Arts.
Yuan Long is a versatile flutist and educator, serving on the faculty of the School of Music, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and as flute lecturer at United International College. A graduate of the Zurich University of Arts with its prestigious Soloist Diploma, he has held major orchestral posts including Solo Flute of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, guest flutist with the Opera House Orchestra Zurich and Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and guest principal of the Shenzhen and Qingdao Symphony Orchestras. A prizewinner at the Singapore International Flute Competition, IBLA Competition, and Singapore Concerto Competition, he has performed with leading conductors and soloists such as Long Yu, John Nelson, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yuja Wang. A respected pedagogue and BiliBili Honored Flute Educator, his students have earned competition prizes and admission to Bern University of the Arts, the University of Manchester, and Indiana University.
