Such a wonderful song from Hall & Oates, and also a very tasteful basspart! The basslines are very melodic and support the vocals. It’s the challenge to play the bass with ease but also with playing the accents (especially syncopated notes) at the right moment/the right feel. When I’m studying a song I always repeat the maingroove for at least twenty minutes in a loop. At first you think you’ve got it, but by studying it for a repeated time you hear what you do right and what not 😊. At least that’s my experience.

What I consider as the maingroove is bar 1-2, which is also played in the Choruses. The other maingroove of the song is the groove in the Verse. Listen for instance at bar 5. This groove starts with 1,5 quarter note and than followed by a quarter or 1,5 quarter note, and on the fourth beat it sometimes is two eight notes or the last two sixteenth notes of the fourth beat. But the feel of the first 1,5 quarter note followed by a syncopated note is always there.

Scott Edards plays beautiful licks in the bar before the pre-choruses starts. Listen for instanec at bar 12 and 30. My most favorite lick is in the interlude (bar 45-46) where Scott plays beautifully towards the high C# and D in bar 46 and 47.

I play this song on a Fender Jazz Bass with roundwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression. Don’t forget to tune your bass a little bit higher (A4 = 443 Hz).

Bass: Scott Edwards
