We hope the festival will be a catalyst for that, just like it's been a catalyst in other cities like Berlin and Toronto where it's really been like something like a tail wind for an industry. We think the same thing can happen in Dubai, and we want to build a long term industry there and the festival is part of it.
Commissioning and bringing talent there and the many components that go into an industry. We hope we can make a contribution to that."

"As you probably know it's the first solely Arabian feature film and this is quite an achievement, because after all those years, finally we had some bold producers come up with the first idea, then the script, to make this film.
And I was really delighted to be the first sort of Arab/Palestinian/Canadian director to get involved. The challenge was amazing; because there's totally different cultural nuances, there are lots of sensitive elements in the story, in the mannerisms. We had to be very cautious to avoid the stereotyping. I think my duty was to tell the story as is, a real story, a simple story, and let the audience feel the family, the Saudi family, which in a way is a metaphor at large for the society they're living in."

DUBAI AND SAUDI FILMS SHOWCASED AT CANNES
The Dubai film festival held its annual reception in Cannes this week to help raise awareness for their event which takes place in December.
Neil Stephenson, Dubai festival director spoke to AP Entertainment about what the festival aims to achieve.

The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2005 recorded 30,000 screening admissions, and showcased 98 films from 46 different countries representing 12 different program sections. With a total of 187 public screenings and 13 press screenings, the event featured approximately 38 Arab films.
Also making its mark in Cannes this week was the first Saudi Arabian feature film ever to be made, 'Keif Alhal.'
As the first Saudi Arabian film ever produced, the truly pioneering film breaks taboos on every level. Financed by the progressive Saudi Prince Walid Bin Talal, founder of Rotana Productions, the film tells the story of a Saudi actress and portrays a family caught in a struggle between modernity and tradition.
It's making is a real landmark and the film signifies the birth of Saudi film-making in a country where the first movie theatre is still under construction and women are only truly visible behind closed doors.
