This is the mineshaft or tunnel used by the Union Army to dig under the Confederate line and under the Confederate's Ammo Supply. The Confederates tried digging a counter tunnel, but missed it by less than 15 feet. On the morning of July 30th, 1864 at 4:45am, the fuse was lit and after a few minutes a 30' deep, 60' wide crater was blasted out from under the Confederates.

You can also the wooded area where the Union Army charged from. The Union Army lost this particular Battle of the Siege of Petersburg, after waves of soldiers piled into the crater, not being able to climb out. The Confederate Army just stood around the rim shooting at Union soldiers "like a turkey shoot". A sad day in American History.
