China’s New Drone Mothership "Jiu Tian" Could Change Future Warfare — or Crash in Combat!
China has unveiled its most ambitious unmanned weapon yet — the Jiu Tian, a massive drone mothership that can carry and launch up to 100 drones simultaneously. Dubbed a “Sky High” supercarrier, this aircraft has raised eyebrows around the world for its sheer size, firepower, and unique role in swarm warfare.
Here’s What Makes the Jiu Tian Stand Out:
Wingspan: 25 meters (twice the size of most fighter jets)
Payload Capacity: 6 tons, including drones, bombs, and missiles
Range: Up to 7,000 km
Max Altitude: 15,000 meters (nearly 50,000 feet)
Drone Swarm Launcher: Deploys around 100 drones from both sides of its belly
What Will It Be Used For?
China’s plan is to fly the Jiu Tian close to enemy airspace and launch its drone swarm to take out air defences—a modern tactic in drone-based warfare. The drones are expected to carry out precision strikes, electronic warfare, and surveillance, giving the Chinese military a new strategic edge.
More Powerful Than U.S. Drones?
While American drones like the MQ-9 Reaper and Global Hawk are well known, the Jiu Tian boasts greater firepower and launch capability, setting it apart. Unlike the Global Hawk, it can strike, and it can do more damage than the Reaper in one mission.
But Is It Really a Game-Changer?
Not everyone is impressed.
Defence analysts and U.S. military experts have criticized the aircraft as being:
Too big and slow
Lacking stealth features
Highly visible to radar and vulnerable to air defences
One expert bluntly called it a “missile magnet.” Its role is impressive in theory, but its survivability in modern warfare is questionable. Many believe that advanced air defence systems will easily detect and destroy it long before it unleashes its swarm.
First Mission Expected in June 2025:
The aircraft was first showcased at the Zhuhai Air Show in 2024, and sources say it will be deployed for testing next month. If successful, it could soon enter service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
India's Strategic Watch:
India must stay alert. Whether it becomes a true weapon of war or ends up as a paper tiger, India's defence planners must monitor Jiu Tian’s deployment, performance, and combat relevance.
