In 2022, the Chhattisgarh government announced the construction of a bridge over the Kotari river in south Kanker to connect nearly 70 remote villages cut off during the monsoon. But instead of welcoming the project, local Adivasi communities are strongly opposing it.
For them, the river and the surrounding forest are not just geography — they are life, livelihood, and identity. They fear that the bridge will bring outsiders, exploitation, and ultimately the loss of their forest.
