The world is at war, Russia’s war in Ukraine has been on for 18 months, Israel has been bombing Hamas for over a month now after the October 7 terror attacks. These wars involve three of India’s top 5 defence suppliers—Russia, US and Israel.

These countries would prioritise weapons to fight their ongoing wars before thinking of exports. This is the biggest lesson for India – India cannot depend on the outside world for its defence requirements. We need to design, develop and produce our own weapons. Especially for a country facing two unpredictable adversaries along unsettled boundaries.

India has implemented an aggressive policy of defence indigenisation. It wants to become one of the world’s largest weapon exporters.

Lt General Vinod Khandare, Principal Advisor to the Ministry of Defence joins the News9 Plus Show to understand the challenges and vision of defence indigenisation.

India is arming and aiming, defence indigenisation, which started in two phases—the first one in 2014 – was Make in India-- and the second one in 2020—Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The government has just cleared the first proposal by Sweden’s Saab to make shoulder-fired rockets in India.

As the western defence companies are ramping up arms production and the world has steadily exported arms worth $100 billion each year and arms exports are linked to geopolitics, what does this mean for India’s policy of 100 % FDI in defence?

General Khandare, a key mover in some of the most significant defence reforms in post-independence India, such as the restructuring of the ordnance factory board, shares his in-depth insights on the issue with the News9 Plus Show.

General Khandare also explains various hurdles before realising an Indian military-industrial complex and why there is an imminent need for a change in mindsets.
