Jogyesa Temple was established in 1910 under the Japanese colonial rule under the name Gakhwangsa Temple by monks wishing for the independence of Joseon Buddhism and the restoration of national independence.

At that time, Gakhwangsa Temple was the headquarters of modern Korean Buddhism. It was the first Korean Buddhist church under the Japanese colonial rule. It was the first Buddhist temple to be established within the four gates(Old Seoul boundary).
