കേരളത്തിൽ 1983 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 27-നു നിലവിൽ വന്ന പക്ഷിസങ്കേതം ആണ്‌ ഡോ. സാലിം അലി പക്ഷിസങ്കേതം, തട്ടേക്കാട്‌ അഥവാ തട്ടേക്കാട് പക്ഷിസങ്കേതം. 25.16 ച.കി.മി വിസ്തീർണ്ണമുള്ള ഈ പ്രദേശം പലവംശത്തിലുള്ള നാട്ടുപക്ഷികളുടെ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയും കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ പക്ഷിസങ്കേതവുമാണ്‌. അവകൂടാതെ പലതരം ദേശാടനപക്ഷികളും കാലാകാലങ്ങളിൽ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നു. പ്രശസ്ത ഇന്ത്യൻ പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഡോ. സാലിം അലി പക്ഷിനിരീക്ഷണത്തിനായി പലതവണ ഇവിടെ എത്തിയിരുന്നു. 1950 കളിൽ തന്നെ ഇവിടം ഒരു പക്ഷിസങ്കേതമാക്കണം എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ശുപാർശ ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. 1970-കളിൽ സാലിം അലി പ്രദേശത്തു നടത്തിയ സർവേയ്ക്കു ശേഷമാണ് പക്ഷിസങ്കേതമാക്കാനുള്ള പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ത്വരിതഗതിയിലായത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥമാണ്‌ ഈ പക്ഷിസങ്കേതത്തിന്‌ ഡോ. സാലിം അലി പക്ഷിസങ്കേതം എന്ന് നാമകരണം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. ഇന്ന് ഇവിടെ ദേശാടകരടക്കം 330 ഇനം പക്ഷികൾ ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ്‌ കരുതുന്നത്‌.


The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 km, and located about 12 km from Kothamangalam (Kerala state, India), was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Salim Ali, one of the best-known ornithologists, described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India. Thattekkad literally means flat forest, and the region is an evergreen low-land forest located between the branches of the Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.
