A two-time U.S. Open champion when he arrived at Winged Foot, Bob Jones had also finished as the runner-up four times, twice by way of a playoff. Extra golf would be a requirement again, as his three-stroke lead after 54 holes evaporated thanks to two triple bogeys during the final round. The 36-hole playoff the next day against Al Espinosa left little in doubt, however, with Jones winning by 23 strokes to claim the title for a third time.
