Why You Should Never Hurt The Holy Spirit

Sermon Notes:
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4v30 (NKJV)

‘Grieve’ (lypeō) is to cause grief, grieve, and be in heaviness.
1. to make sorrowful
3. to affect with sadness, cause grief, to throw into sorrow
5. to grieve, offend
6. to make one uneasy, cause him a scruple

“Grieve” is where we get our word “get your feelings hurt.”

By Grieving the Holy Spirit:
- We break His heart
- We don’t lose the Holy Spirit
- We open ourselves to the enemy

We grieve the Holy Spirit by the way we live.

1. We grieve the Holy Spirit when we hold on to toxic emotions.

Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. Ephesians 4v31 (NKJV)

We can’t host the Holy Spirit and hold on to a grudge, an offense, or bitterness at the same time.

2. We grieve the Holy Spirit when our speech is morally rotten.

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. Ephesians 4v29 (NKJV)
‘Corrupt’ is ‘sapros’, a word used for rotten fish, rotten fruits, and worm-eaten olives.

When the Holy Spirit fills us we speak in new tongues but when we use gutter language it grieves the Holy Spirit.

Cursing is unbecoming of to spirit-filled Christian (Eph 5v4)

Lying is the opposite of the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Truth (Eph 4v25; Jn 14v17)

Unseasoned words that hurt people also hurt the Holy Spirit (Col 4v6)

3. We grieve the Holy Spirit when we are rude to people.

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4v32 (NKJV)

If you want the presence of the Dove, you need to have the nature of the Lamb.

“Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.”
