How to repair BMW E46 3 Series Convertible Hydraulic Roof Pump - Internal Electric Motor
Replacement.
If you're E46 Convertible roof is struggling to open or close it may benefit from replacing the internal motor within the hydraulic pump unit.
The symptoms of a worn motor are typically very slowly opening or closing, the roof getting stuck before it reaches halfway and then having to be manually moved by hand.

The job should take no longer than 45 minutes to one hour depending on how easy you find it to unsolder and remove the small circuit board from the bottom of your existing motor.

3:22 - Solenoid Removal
4:55 - Block Removal
6:05 - Motor Case Removal
8:10 - Motor Removal


Tools Needed to replace the internal motor:
4mm Hex Bit
5mm Hex Bit - Refilling plug.
Torx 25 Bit - 150mm Long minimum - 200mm is preferable.
Soldering Iron
Solder Sucker - (Optional)
Desoldering Wick
Brake / Clutch Cleaner

Torque Settings.
M6 Bolts
5.6 Grade - 4.5nm
5.8 Grade - 6nm
6.8 Grade - 7.5nm
8.8 Grade - 10nm

Replacement Motors can be found on ebay or Aliexpress etc.
Search for "E46 Roof Motor"
Mine was a "D type shaft"

Depending on the replacement motor you have purchased you may need a Dremel or similar tool to remove a small section of the motor terminals if they are the larger 6.3mm size and not the original 4.8mm.

Motor Polarity.
If your replacement motor does not have the Positive or Negative clearly marked you can determine the correct polarity before soldering on the circuit board by connecting the motor to a 12v Power supply.
The Motors correct orientation is in a anti clockwise direction.
