Foxglove - Digitalis purpurea - Growing Foxglove

Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, is a herbaceous perennial or bienniel native to Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. It’s hardy and easily grown in our New England climate outdoors. It blooms for several weeks during the summer, although bloom-time can be prolonged by cutting off the spent flowers before seed is set.

It prefers full sun to light shade, an average garden soil, and is bothered by only a few insects, most notably slugs and aphids. They don’t seem to be too finicky in my experience, and they make a decent cut flower. However, every part of the plant is listed as ‘poisonous,’ so take care.

The color range of Foxglove includes mauve, pink,
carmine, white, and violet.
