Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an incurable and progressive inflammatory lung disease.

It is one of the top three causes of death worldwide.

COPD exacerbations can have a major effect on disease progression. These acute periods of symptom worsening are categorised as mild, moderate, or severe.

An exacerbation typically involves increased airway inflammation. Patients have increased hyperinflation and gas trapping, with reduced expiratory flow, leading to increased dyspnoea. COPD exacerbations are associated with a decline in health status, lung function, and quality of life.

In this series, doctors from the University of Exeter and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom discuss the role of eosinophils and inflammation in COPD, strategies to reduce risk for exacerbations, and development of individualised treatment plans to manage exacerbations when they do occur. Individualised treatment plans often include triple therapy to optimise outcomes.
