The closest thing modern rockets have to a true common ancestor is probably the German V2, it was the first ever human-made vehicle to cross the Karman line and reach space! And you can recreate it in Kerbal Space Program with the mod Completely Non-Aggressive Rocketry, which adds the parts to build it in the game!
