THE ARMOR OF GOD.
In Ephesians 6:14-17, we see that the Christian's spiritual armor was made up of six pieces: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit.
But what do these "pieces" represent?
When the apostle Paul wrote the letter to the brothers in Ephesus, he was in prison.
Reflecting on the spiritual battles he was going through, he was inspired by the prophetic text in Isaiah 59:16,17 and saw in the armor worn by Roman soldiers a great illustration for the protection of the believer spiritually connected to Christ.
Paul used each piece of spiritual armor to represent an attribute of Jesus' character that must be found in every Christian for him to have victory over evil.
THE BELT OF TRUTH
The belt was a wide leather band, placed around the waist, to secure the other pieces of armor to the soldier's body and to support the sword.
Likewise, truth, divine revelation, is the integrating factor in the Christian's life.
It connects him with Jesus whose righteousness was the girdle around his loins and the truth the girdle around his loins (Isaiah 11:5), enables him to practice the Word of God and make use of it to protect himself from the Enemy and attack him, moving forward to do the will of God.
Without knowing and practicing the truth, the Christian is left unprotected and becomes a easy target for the Devil, the Father of Lies.
THE BREASTPLATE OF JUSTICE
The cuirass consisted of two pieces: a frontal one, which covered the thorax; another posterior, which covered the back.
This piece protected the body's vital organs.
When Paul spoke of the breastplate of righteousness, he must have righteousness in mind, but mainly justification; the righteousness imputed to the believer by Christ, without which he is not reckoned righteous before God, nor can he receive the Holy Spirit, who makes him think, feel, and act righteously, practice righteousness.
Since He who knew no sin made it to be sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21), to overcome, the believer cannot trust in his own righteousness, but in the righteousness that comes of God through the sacrifice of Jesus.
This is the breastplate that shields the Christian's heart against sin and the Enemy's accusations.
