Gordon McQueen, the man, the myth, the football legend, faced a challenge that
wasn't in any playbook. What could have been a simple disease, turned into a dire
enemy that took Gordon’s life in 2023. This is a story about his fight with Dementia.
Let’s get into it.

Born on June 26, 1952, in Kilbirnie, Scotland, McQueen grew up in a small town, Gordon's
love for football was evident from a young age. His father, Tom McQueen, was also a
footballer, so you could say it ran in the family!
In his early years, Gordon was just like any other kid, kicking a ball around with friends in the
streets of Kilbirnie. But even then, there was something special about his skills. He had this
incredible height and presence, which made him stand out on the pitch. Gordon's talent
didn't go unnoticed though. He started playing for Kilbirnie Ladeside, a local junior team,
where his performances quickly caught the eye of scouts. It wasn't long before he made a
big move.
McQueen started his football journey as a goalkeeper, just like his dad, Tom. But it wasn't
long before he switched things up and moved to playing as a center-back. He was just 18
when St Mirren saw potential in him and signed him up. Soon, other clubs started keeping
tabs on him, and Leeds United jumped in with a 30,000 pounds offer, which is around
500,000 pounds in today's money. They saw him as the perfect guy to step into the shoes of
the aging Jack Charlton.
