In the past 36 hours, Twitter is awash with reports of spam originating as logged issues on GitHub projects.

Hello, this is Trac Bannon reporting from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.

Cybersecurity researcher, John Hammond, posted screenshots of GitHub issue notifications that he received that included links to not safe for work content. Many GitHub users tailor their settings to receive notification of new and changed issues by email.

Individuals who have reported the spamming to GitHub have shared that GitHub’s trust and Safety Team are reviewing reported accounts, and the content GitHub’s abuse responses varied based on the findings of this team.

There is some element of social engineering by the spammers who appear to create fake accounts using female names plus four digits then invite recipients to connect with them or view racy content. For now, the online community is commiserating together at this latest irritant.

GitHub has not made any formal announcements and appears to be addressing the spam on a case by case basis. If you receive spam: report it, delete it, and by all means, do not click the links!
