NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Thursday proposed reviving wartime-era "Victory bonds" as a means of raising money to strengthen Canada’s economy, as the country deals with the fallout from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Singh said Canadians would be able to purchase five or 10-year bonds, adding that bond revenues would be tax-free if held to maturity.

Singh said money raised through the Victory Bonds would be used to invest in healthcare, infrastructure and other parts of the Canadian economy that could be impacted by the trade war.

The NDP leader said that while Canada had been spared additional hurt from an additional round of tariffs, the country’s auto industry still faces sector-specific tariffs in addition to the existing tariffs imposed on March 4. He said the tariffs and instability caused by Trump is negatively impacting Canadian workers.
