"This is just the spin move by the church. Cardinal Dolan is brilliant tactician for the church. That's why he's cardinal. We just recently had a report, the Brooklyn Diocese paid out twenty-seven million dollars to four victims for failing, having mandated reporters fail, and this statement is on the heels of that report. A distraction - don't look at this, look at this. I don't view anything that a Catholic Church pays for can really be considered independent."
STORYLINE:
A leading advocate for survivors of priest abuse is calling a new review by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York a "distraction."
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has hired a former federal judge to review its procedures and protocols for handling allegations of sexual abuse.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced the appointment of Barbara Jones on Thursday.
Dolan said he was ordering the review because Catholics in New York have demanded "accountability, transparency" and "action" from church leadership.
Shaun Dougherty, a survivor of abuse himself and a leader in the organization Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), called the Archdiocese action a "spin move," meant to distract from the ongoing abuse crisis.
"I don't view anything that a Catholic Church pays for can really be considered independent," said Dougherty.
He called the church to stop lobbying against the Child Victims Act, a law that would make it easier for molestation victims to seek criminal charges and file lawsuits against their abusers.
The Roman Catholic Church is the most vocal opponent of the New York bill, saying potential civil suits alleging abuse would financially devastate the church.
