Since its conception, Tata group has grown into a sprawling conglomerate of over 100 companies across the globe. Among the first foreign companies to enter Africa, the Tata group has a strong presence and spread in the African business community. The Tata group began its relationship with Africa in 1977 when it set up Tata Zambia, which was engaged primarily in the imports of Tata vehicles, marketing and providing after-sales services. Tata now boasts of an African footprint across 12 countries with further expansion in the pipeline, in sectors as diverse as automobile, IT, hospitality, telecommunications, mining and more.

In 1994, the Tata group established Tata Africa Holdings in Johannesburg, South Africa, which now serves as the group's headquarters on the continent. Tata Africa Holdings is responsible for identifying development opportunities and promoting new projects for the Tata group in Africa.
