Up to 80,000 Palestinian worshippers attended the first Friday prayers of Ramadan 2026 at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest site. The mosque sits on a site also known to Jews as the Temple Mount and has long been a focal point of religious significance and tension.

Israeli forces increased security around the city ahead of the prayers, reflecting the sensitive nature of the holy site. Worshippers performed prayer rituals and gathered in the mosque’s courtyard amid tight security.

The prayers come amid ongoing efforts to stabilize Gaza and support reconstruction, as well as continuing humanitarian concerns in the region.
