In June 2013, at a Walmart in Jacksonville, Donald Smith, an elderly man, took advantage of the trust of a mother who was shopping with her daughter, 8-year-old Cherish. Donald approached them with sweet talk, offering to buy them clothes and inviting them for a meal. The mother, reassured by his words and kindness, trusted him and thanked him for his generosity. After spending hours shopping together, Donald suggested buying burgers from a restaurant inside the mall and invited Cherish to go with him. The mother, preoccupied with shopping, agreed without hesitation, thinking Donald was just a kind older man. But the reality turned out to be horrifying.

Donald never went to the restaurant. Instead, he took Cherish to a secluded area away from people, where he committed his heinous crime. He murd///ered the little girl and ki//lled her brutally. Police found Cherish's body in an abandoned area a day after she went missing. Donald was quickly arrested after the crime, convicted of k/idnapping, m/urder, and ass/ault, and sentenced to death.

The shocking part of this story is that Donald had a long history of crimes but was still free to roam. This story makes you think twice before trusting strangers, even those who seem kind and innocent.
