Archon war happens and many gods had their own people and all gods wanted humanity to prosper in their own image and they fought with one another. Think of basically a Civilization V game for the seat of Archon.

So many gods were killed or sealed by other gods or Rex Lapis himself.

However, the lingering regrets for a better humanity, their loss, or loneliness from being sealed cause their residue essence to form demons. The left over essence also caused miasma and drove monsters insane with the defeated or sealed god's regrets, causing regular fauna or animals to mutate into aggressive monsters or even other humans to go crazy.

Rex Lapis knew that he could not be everywhere at once and the Adepti themselves were few in numbers to combat the demons, so he summoned many yakshas, not just 5... MANY. Out of all the Yakshas, the top 5 strongest were Bosacius, Indarias, Bonanus, Menogias, and Alatus.

These 5 were the strongest and worked together to fight the demons.

During this time, a young girl named Qiqi was killed during the battle between adepti, yakshas, and demons. In order to make up for their mistake, the Adepti granted her adepti power but it was too much for her little body and she went berserk and had to be sealed in amber.

The Yakshas were successful in defeating the demons, however as they continued to defeat the demons, they slowly gathered the defeated demon's demonic essence in their body which accumulated over time, they are basically Sargeras from Warcraft lore. The accumulated essence started to take a toll on the yakshas.

The corrupted yakshas either broke down and destroyed themselves, sealed themselves, or sought to kill the other yakshas, thus becoming like demon like yakshas.

The non corrupted yaksha and corrupted yakshas fought a great battle. Out of all the 5 great yakshas, 3 of them became corrupted and died, with the only two surviving yakshas being Bosacius and the strongest Yaksha, Alatus, who would later take on the monkier "Xiao"

Overcome with grief of their fate, Bosacius decided to depart from Liyue into the unknown. Leaving only Xiao to maintain his contract with Rex Lapis to protect Liyue. Before Bosacius left, Bosacius would seal some of his belongings in Liyue in the Yaksha's Wish Quest.

The corruption in Xiao grew and he almost lost his life in battle. However, Venti would save him and heal him and ease his pain, though to this day the demonic essence still plagues Xiao's body with great pain. Venti played the flute, causing Xiao to be fond of it. (My personal theory is that Venti sealed a bulk of Xiao's power and corruption into the yaksha mask, which Xiao personally dons to access his old power but it comes with corrupting demonic essence that ebbs away at his life, thus the HP drain. Yes every Yaksha has a mask, but Venti took the mask and sealed a big portion of Xiao's power and corruption in it, though Xiao is still feeling the aches of the corruption residue that wasn't sealed)

Atalus, now with the name Xiao, still fulfills his contract with Rex Lapis and now is living at Wangshu inn.
