President Donald Trump has come under fire for attending a lavish Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago resort, just hours before a major food assistance program (SNAP) ran out of funds due to the ongoing government shutdown. The program, which supports around 42 million Americans, faced suspension on November 1, sparking widespread concern.

Photos from the event showed Trump seated alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, surrounded by flapper dancers and guests dressed in Roaring ’20s costumes. Critics — including Governor Gavin Newsom and Representative Ro Khanna — accused Trump of prioritizing “billionaires over hungry Americans.”

The White House defended the president, blaming Democrats for the funding lapse and urging them to “reopen the government.” Trump, meanwhile, claimed he was awaiting a court’s decision to authorize emergency funds, saying he would be “honored” to restore SNAP benefits if given legal clearance.

Federal judges in Rhode Island and Massachusetts have ordered the administration to use emergency resources to keep SNAP temporarily funded, warning that halting the program would cause “irreparable harm” to millions of families.
