When you look at a period table many times you will see rows 6 and 7 at the bottom of the periodic table. This is done in order to keep the table from being too wide. These two rows are called the lanthanide series and the actinide series of transition metals. The Actinide Metals are found in group 3 and period 7 These two rows are produced when electrons are added to the f-block orbitals.Therefore this block of elements are referred to as f-block elements. The actinide series of metals make up the 5f block.
The Actinide metals are elements 89 through 103 and are transition metals.The actinide elements are radioactive or unstable. Elements listed after plutonium which is element 94 do not occur in nature and have been made in the lab. Actinides have the following properties, they are transition metals, they are radioactive, tarnish easily in the air, are very dense, and have the ability to combine with most non-metals. Uranium and Plutonium are probably most known because of their use in nuclear industry and in the military.Here is a list of each Actinide Metal and a quick fact about it.
