The Evolution of KTM Fuel Injection System over the Years

Years of research and development have resulted in KTM's EXC TPI fuel injection system. After nearly 14 years of testing, the company has finally found a solution that works. The Orbital system was the first iteration of fuel injection in a 2-stroke engine. This system, however, did not perform as expected and produced an unusual sound, making it difficult to integrate into the existing engine chassis. As a result, KTM decided to drop the Orbital system, recognizing that customers would be unlikely to buy an engine with such unusual performance.

The second iteration, known as the DI (Direct Injection) system, was similar to the TPI (Transfer Port Injection) system, but the main difference was that fuel was injected directly into the cylinder rather than first passing through the transfer ports. This system performed admirably, and KTM planned to sell it in 2015. However, while the 250EXC model performed admirably, the 300EXC model suffered from overheating issues, prompting KTM to abandon the DI system as well.

Finally, KTM determined that injecting fuel into the transfer ports was the best solution. This approach resulted in the development of the TPI project, which was refined and perfected over several years before being made available for purchase as EXC TPI models. The TPI system has proven to be a dependable and high-performance fuel injection solution for 2-stroke engines.
