This film depicts Walter's journey from loneliness to hope and joy. Walter learns kindness to others is its own reward. To capture this range of emotion, I enlist a small orchestra: singular woodwinds, light brass, vibrant strings and a touch of percussion. Beginning quietly, we hear strings supporting Walter’s theme in the bassoon. As his attempts to save a dying plant appear to fail; flute, oboe and clarinet indicate his despair and then wonder as the plant blooms. Strings and woodwinds weave together to form a tapestry as the blooms multiply. Walter is awe struck and as the blooms draw close, with a flourish, Walter waves them off. Wishing to leave, Walter pushes a window which bursts with a flurry of strings, woodwinds and percussion. A whirlwind draws Walter and the orchestra up into the sky where prevailing winds allow Walter and the orchestra to soar and glide smoothly to the ground. Walter and the bloom exchange thanks and reassurance, as Walter's theme is now fully developed. The orchestra extols his joy in a crescendo of wonder, and the strings give a final pizzicato wink.
