The history of Calgary, on the other hand, is connected to the North West Mounted Police. The police base was established for two main reasons - curbing the trade in whisky and establishing the interest of Ottawa in the West. The North West Mounted Police settled in what would later be known as Alberta in 1874, shortly after quelling the Métis rebellion of 1870. They established Fort Macleod and Fort Walsh. By the Bow River, the North West Mounted Police contracted I. G. Baker, an American company, to build Fort Calgary. Just a few settlers came initially because the available shacks were few.

The Canadian Pacific Railway built a railroad connecting Eastern Canada and the Northwest territories through Calgary. The construction was completed in August 1882. This spurred a lot of development, which had been stagnating, as ranchers came to lease cheap land. Calgary became an official town in 1884, with a population of more than 1000.

Other settlements such as Fort Macleod, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, St. Albert, and Lethbridge also developed into towns during this time frame.
