The Young Hero of Holland
This is a well-known story from Netherlands. The people build brick walls to hold back the water from the sea and prevent the fields from getting flooded.
One day, a little boy named Hans, was walking to his friend’s home. On his return, the weather became stormy. Hans noticed a leak in the brick wall. He knew that it was very dangerous because the wall could fall and the sea might flood the town. The wheat crops would die and the people would starve.
The wind was blowing hard. Hans decided to fix the problem on his own. He wrapped his scarf around his hand and pushed his fist into the hole on the wall. This stopped the water from gushing out.
Hans was getting tired. ‘I must stay strong and brave,’ thought Hans.
Finally, when it was morning, the storm passed away. An old man discovered Hans, with his hand still in the wall. People rushed to fix the leak. Hans was shivering. He was bundled up in warm clothes and taken home.
The town was saved because little Hans showed a great sense of responsibility.
